Prabtairro is a human colony located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It is a Mars-like, D-Class Moon orbiting a gas giant in the outer ranges of a binary red dwarf system. It is larger and more massive than Earth, although due to high concentrations of low-density rocks and ice it has a lower surface gravity. It was colonized by the Confederacy of Humanity sometime after the War of the Decamillenial Transition, in order to secure resources for the nearby locally important planet of Moúdhroneos.
Prior to the War of the Decamillenial Transition, the heavily populated planet of Moúdhroneos, the main key to human control of the Rigonot Expanse of LMC's Tarantula Nebula, was supplied by multiple other planets and colonies from the surrounding sector i.e. Moúdhroneos sector, but it was also quite reliant of imports from more distant locations within the expanse due to its location on a vital trade route.
After the War of the Decamillenial Transition fragmented Confederate authority over the region, the still-loyal planet found itself importing multiple vital bulk resources from other polities, which was deemed to be risky for a planet of such importance. Therefore, colonization of neighboring systems was promoted by the local government, aside from the further exploitation of the system itself.
Prabtairro, being located only 2.7 light-years away from Moúdhroneos, was a prime candidate from the start. While the moon had no life or particularly large deposit of valuable minerals, it had massive surface deposits of bauxite, zincochromite, and olivine which are industrially important, although not really expensive, ores. There is also a significant concentration of harvestable ice, due to the moon being a mixture of water ice and rocks.
Soon enough, a mining and processing colony was established on the moon in order to extract these resources. The continued demand from the populated planet for industry, construction, and shipbuilding based the moon's economy and causes a rapid population growth. It is expected that soon the moon's population will be approaching ten million, and the only reason that the population had not exceeded one million would be a late data.
The economy of Prabtairro revolves around the mining and processing of basic ores. Due to a constant demand for labor, the unemployment rate on Prabtairro is estimated at 0.12%. With a workforce sized at 435,000 (the others are families of the employees, such as kids or stay-at-home parents), ore mining employs about 30,000 people in seven companies and their processing employs about 200,000 in even more companies, producing 510 million tons of (variously alloyed) steel, 90 million tons of Aluminium, 5 million tons of Chromium, and many other metal products.
Of the remaining workforce, there is a significant amount employed in industries heavily reliant on those, such as shipping, power plants, hydrogen cracking plants, and heavy machinery manufacturers. Industries tied directly to the mining industry employs another 123,000, with the remaining 80,000 or so being employed in the service or food industries.
The GDP per capita of the moon is estimated at 3,430 C-Units (after adjusted for the cost of living), or a total GDP of 3.23 billion C-Units, making it a relatively prosperous place. Combined with a continuous demand for immigrant labor, this fuels consistent economic and population growth on the moon.
Foodstuffs and carbon-based products is the main import of the colony.
Shipping Industry Edit
While some of the metal products are consumed on the moon for further expansion or constructing cargo ships/machinery, an overwhelming majority is exported to industrial centers in the Moúdhroneos System. Due to the sheer scale of the exports (~580 million tons across 2.7 light-years), there is a dedicated supply line between the two systems, operated by several companies contracted by the mining or processing companies. Logistically, bringing up such quantities from a moon with a gravity well as big as Earth's is a major challenge even without the atmosphere. Hence the shipping companies have a dozen dedicated plots on the moon, in a mined-out region of about 5 square kilometers each, as the location for "takeoff pads".
First, massive amounts of cargo are gathered in the area, with up to 150,000 tons of cargo gathered every pad in a daily launch. While this sounds massive, this corresponds to a cube about 30 meters in side, which does fit comfortably in the pad area (although it looks more disk-like). A large fusion engine is then attached to the bound-up cargo, and is filled with several hundred tons of hydrogen fuel. After the area is evacuated, the engine is activated from a distance, lifting the cargo slowly up into space and into medium orbit of the planet. From orbit, they can either be split into several smaller pieces and be carried by an ordinary trading vessel, or attached to a special ship with little more than its engines. Upon arrival at Moúdhroneos, they are generally left in orbit prior to the distribution into the planet. The ships then go back, carrying cargoes of food and other items.
