Proxima Centauri (HIP 70890/Proxima C/P.C.) is the smallest star of the trinary system Rigel Kentaurus (Otherwise known as Alpha Centauri), orbiting at roughly 0.218 light years from it's sister stars and 4.3 light years from planet Earth. The red dwarf star is more popularly known as the closest star to Earth, home world of the Humans, and as such was the target for early explorations and experiments at the very beginning of interstellar travel.

Overview Edit

The star was first known to humanity by 1915 CE SST (Solar Standard Time), discovered by Robert Innes. Alpha Centauri A and B, the two, brighter stars of the system had been known to the civilization previously for centuries, as they are some of the brightest stars from Sol. Proxima Centauri has a total of 8 major planets and completes one revolution around the major stars in the system every 535.789234 thousand years. The first humans to arrive in the system did so in 2061 CE, of which were the first humans to leave the influence of Sol.

The system was home to early extra-planetary studies of every nature, and the planets and their moons were thoroughly studied by humankind. The system remained primarily a scientific location until 2566 CE, whereupon rising tensions at the end of the First Age caused the purpose of the system to shift to a majorly militarized function. Due to the systems high proximity to the human homeworld, it was once the largest militarized system in the entire Milky Way. Currently, reforms are attempting to change the purpose of the system to more peaceful use. The system is currently the fifth largest military system in the greater Milky Way, and will likely remain this way for many years.

Planets Edit

The planets of Proxima Centauri were named primarily after those who discovered it. Planets with static numeric identifications were soon replaced with nicknames as the public saw fit, and eventually the names became permanent. Each planet was named by one of the countries involved in first manned mission to Proxima, Vagi I. The eight planets of the system, from closest to farthest from the parent star, are as follows: Aeros, Vird, Tatir, Jovia, Mint, Mik, Uun and Yiin.

History Edit

First Age Edit

Barely two years after the discovery and invention of the first warp propulsion systems in 2059 CE, the human civilization had already begun developing it's first steps to other stars. By 2060, working probes had been sent to Proxima and returned, bearing crucial information for a manned mission. The very first set of missions were developed primarily by NASA, the ESA, and the Russian and Chinese space agencies. The missions were titled Vagi, named after the Latin root of 'wanderers'.

On Christmas Eve (December 24), 2061, Vagi I, with a 10 man crew including Vladimir Romanyuk and Rob Dawn, began their two week trip through space. Vladimir Romanyuk would be the first person to walk on the surface of an extrasolar planet, and Rob Dawn would be the first to publish scientific reports on Vird, or Proxima 2.

Many more scientific missions continued to Proxima Centauri for over 20 years, developing a major area of scientific study, significantly increasing humanities understanding of the universe. By this point, however, the system was forgotten in the public's view; stellar flights were staring to become common, and the attention had shifted to many new systems (such as Terranova) being discovered elsewhere. The planets still maintained a small, scientific population until the end of the fist age, or until roughly 2500 CE.

Second Age Edit

After the period of rapid expansion known as the first age, the URSS (United Republic of Space Settlements) that had maintained peace and unity throughout colonized space was starting to strain. Small scale rebellions increased tension throughout humanity. As the URSS realized they might be on the brink of interstellar civil war, they turned to key, relatively unpopulated stars such as Proxima and started to prepare for war.

On March 4th, 2679, a series of terrorist attacks on the URSS stronghold on Mintaka was the breaking point. They triggered not one, but a series of wars eventually influencing all of humanized space, including Proxima. These would be later known as the Eastern Galactic Rebellions, the largest of which, the Inner War, was so far reaching it nearly defeated the URSS in it's entirety.

Proxima at this point was the largest military stronghold in human history. It many instances it partially, if not entirely changed outcomes of entire battles and, arguably, entire wars. It was the primary housing for most of the URSS's fleet, and it's defenses and minerals were able to repair, rearm and refit entire battalions of spacecraft in mere days.

Third Age Edit

By 3000, the human civilization was in complete disarray. The URSS, having lost most of their fleets, were forced to retreat to a handful of major inner colonies and population centers, Sol included. Rebels, having exhausted their supplies as well, were forced to fight for themselves on small, isolated systems far from the inner colonies. Proxima, while still in control, had become weathered as well. At this point, leaders of the URSS gathered in Terrasphere Alpha, determined that the old idea of a single empire governing such vast distances were ineffective and unpredictable. They decided to form a new type of government, similar to feudalistic principles used over one and a half millenia ago. This bureaucracy was called The Confederacy of Humanity, which is still in effect to this day.

At this point in Proxima's life, most of the Inner Colonies were still heavily militarized and functioning. Due to diplomatic reasons, however, the Inner Colonies agreed to start to disarm these systems to forge a stronger trust between the individual stars and planets, allowing most to start to rebuild.

Currently, Proxima Centauri only has 100,000 stationed soldiers, less than one thousandth of it's total capacity. The amount stationed will continue to fall. Plans to convert some of the existing planets to human habitats have proved inconclusive and unlikely, and are still concepts to date.

Military Installations Edit

The planetary system Proxima was originally chosen because of a multitude of factors deemed it a fit location. Proxima was a small, unremarkable star, making it easy to be drowned out by light and radiation of neighboring stars. A positive side effect of this was that any enemies attempting to detect ships orbiting their star by measuring the difference in light as they pass over the star, they are significantly hindered due to the lack of light. The star was stable with few solar flares, and the system was metal rich, giving shipyards the ability to repair their ships even if they were under siege and shipping routes were cut off. The star, being a Dwarf, could also easily outlive the projected lifespan of the bases built in orbit around it.

The design of the stations were primarily Imperial, with many large, complex structures located across all of the planets in bunker-esque configurations, similar to other stations of the time. This contrasted with more recent military designs, which have smaller, fewer, and even in some cases, movable structures, which were easier to capture, but, if they were captured, would be a far less a strategic loss for the defender.
