SepMin PLC (Space Exploitation and Prospecting of Minerals, Public Limited Company) was one of the dominant suppliers of Platinum group metals and other transition metals during the first age. SepMin had close relations with many Spacecraft manufacturors as well as many planetary governments.
SepMin was conceived in the year 2035 as a Subsidiary company of Lonmin plc. It was created to take advantage of the growing demand for metals in off world colonies such as Fort Jupiter. SepMin was a leader in creating necessary Luna mineral infrastructure. By the year 2073 with the privatization of the Warp Drive the mining company out-grew and established independence from her earthbound parent company of Lonmin.
By the year 2100 SepMin had established mining operations on dozens of worlds. With the establishment of the URSS the company faced many harsh regulations but due to a wealthy contract with the Republic's military SepMin plc continued to thrive and grow. By the year 2200 they completely owned half a dozen worlds and had extensive operations on dozens of others.
In 2212 SepMin prospectors came across the planet that SepMin named Lonrho. The planet had the highest concentration of titanium ore and platinum group metals of any planet so far discovered. In the year 2218 the company moved their headquarters from Luna to Lonrho.
In the next 200 years SepMin continued to grow their mining empire to dominate the market. By the year 2400 SepMin was the sole provider for titanium and platinum used in URSS military vessels. Their close ties with the government allowed them to bypass many of the regulations that held back their competitors. In 2450 they owned eighteen worlds and had mining operations on over 100 other worlds. Almost every planetary government had some business with them.
In 2543 rumors that SepMin had caused the genocide of an indigenous life-form on one of their mining outposts caused massive riots and strikes throughout SepMin operations. In 2544 the riots became so violent that many mining facilities had to be closed. SepMin security retaliated with new, harsher regulations. 2,300 rioters were executed in the year 2544 quickly quelling the riots. Employees on strike were denied food or basic supplies as any business affiliated with SepMin. By 2545 work across all operations resumed as normal. During the year 2577 a volcanic eruption completely destroyed a company mining outpost. 4,000 employees lost their lives. Employees blamed SepMin's improper safety protocols. In 2601 a series of terrorist attacks closed operations on 11 worlds. SepMin investigators arrested and incarcerated 43 alleged terrorists. In 2622 Workers again went on strike against poor work conditions. SepMin again denied them basic supplies to bring them back to work.
By 2644 riots once again resumed. 11,000 rioters and employees on strike were executed in the year 2645. for the next 20 years riots and strikes continued, each time quelled by the harsh SepMin security. Tensions were high. In 2679 violent riots broke out on over a dozen SepMin owned worlds. Business was completely halted. In 2680 violent riots took place on the company headquarters of Lonrho. Within the first five hours many dome habitats across the planet had been breached. The conflict continued for five days until SepMin security forces finally started to regain control over the riots. Then six days after the rioting began a nuclear warhead was detonated in the companies headquarters of New Lonmin. SepMin was disbanded as a company in the year 2680 with most of their financial assets in ruins.
SepMin as a company was dedicated to increasing the infrastructure and space faring capabilities of Humanity through the exploitation and contribution of natural resources. They conduct their business the quickest and easiest way possible to ensure long-term success. Due to URSS restricting the industrialization or pollution of habitable worlds SepMin rarely set up operations on worlds that were favorable to human habitation or terraforming. They relied heavily on robotic mining with human observation and some menial labor not suited for robotics. The company looked for employees with either a good knowledge of robotics and mechanics or a knowledge of geology. Employees were often placed on toxic, inhospitable worlds for their first few assignments as that was where it was easiest to conduct mining operations.
At the height of their power SepMin had 1,132 mines spread over 104 worlds. They owned 18 worlds that were used as commercial and local headquarters and sometimes for heavy mining operations. They had business deals that ranged from large military contracts with the URSS to small business deals for platinum, rhodium, iridium and titanium. Many frontier worlds also purchased metals or mining equipment from SepMin to help bolster their local infrastructure.
