Overview Edit

Orbiting the star Nu Phoenicis (HIP 5862 in 9.7.3.), a class F8V white star which is 49 light years away from Sol lies one of humanity’s first extrasolar colonies, Nu Phoenicis 7, or Terranova. The system is 5.3 billion years old.

The planet, a temperate E-Class world, was discovered by the Wayfarer in 2079, one of the first explorer ships to leave the Sol System after the invention of Warp Drive. When the news reached Earth many large corporations began donating money to build colony ships to settle this new paradise. In 2082 the first colony ships arrived in orbit of the planet and after finding a suitable place they landed and began to build a life there.

Thanks to the extensive study of the world they were well prepared for the harsh winters. Thankfully the native plant life and terrestrial live seemed to be able to coexist, but as they didn’t want to tempt fate, the strictly regulated the planting of terrestrial life. Little by little small forests of terrestrial plant and animal life popped up but beneath large domes so as not to affect the native Terranovan life. It has a total of 13 moons, with one selena (Armstrong) and twelve captured asteroids.

Currently the planet has seven billion inhabitants, most live in large eco-friendly cities. The planetary government is currently a Geniocratic Technocracy. It is a relatively new type of government. While the ideas of Geniocracy and Technocracy aren’t new the mixture of both is.

The world is run by a council of both Geniocrats and Technocrats. Their “election” process takes place in nearly a day. All over the world candidates head to a local government building and take a test of intelligence or technological knowledge, depending on what the candidate is applying for. The test results are all done on pencil and paper and no electronics are allowed save for ancient calculators. It is basically a SAT test. Afterwards the papers are run through something like a scantron and a week later the best candidates are chosen. Candidates are allowed to stay in office for two terms of four years.

Terranova exports some of humanity’s greatest technological achievements as well as great philosophical ideas.

With an ESI of 0.9, Terranova is remarkably Earthlike save for the lower temperature. The poles have larger ice caps than on Earth. The summers on Terranova are like spring on Earth but during the winters it isn’t unheard of for lakes and rivers to freeze, making for good skating.

Terranova already supports a thriving alien ecosystem but no intelligent life. It has a diameter of 10574.4 km (6570.6 mi) and a semimajor axis of 1.4 AU, making its year longer than the standard at 1.5 years. It has a gravity of 0.9 g and an atmospheric pressure of 0.5. Upon its discovery, the planet had a mean temperature of -14.2 °C (6.5 °F). It’s local day is only 16 hours and 31 minutes.

Were it not for the native life humans would have tried warming up the planet. Nevertheless, the planet was perfect for colonization, the plants and animals were edible.

With a bit more land than ocean there are more deserts but almost all are icy deserts, coated in century old glaciers. The atmosphere is a bit wetter so it isn’t that big of a difference.

The surface shows signs of bombardment, most likely from asteroids and comets.
